Casting and Memorization

Learning to perform in both main roles and ensemble roles is an essential part of becoming an actor.  Children should participate in theater only if they are happy to perform in either type of role, to the fullest of their ability.

When and how casting is determined

  • During the first several weeks, the cast will run through the show's lines, songs, and ensemble sections.  Students may be assigned temporary character assignments during the first few weeks to evaluate each student's ability to memorize and execute various parts in the play.

  • Casting will be finalized in week 4, based on the director's assessment of each student's commitment to practicing, memorization of lines and songs, attendance, and classroom behavior.

  • There will be no refunds due to dissatisfaction with casting or line count.

Solo speaking and singing lines

  • Spoken and solo singing lines are not guaranteed to any student.  Students who demonstrate good practice, memorization, and behavior are more likely to receive larger parts in the play.

Memorization

  • Parents are expected to practice with the student in-between rehearsals, and to assure that the student meets memorization deadlines for their assigned lines and songs.

  • If a students arrives unprepared for a rehearsal, the director may ask  the student to observe the rehearsal rather than participating.

  • If significant memorization problems persist, a student's lines may be reduced, or their role may be assigned to an understudy for the final performance.

Classroom Behavior and Attendance

Students are expected to arrive on time, listen attentively, follow directions, conduct themselves with maturity, and not be disruptive.

  • Lateness or absence is detrimental to all other students, and is excused only if valid reasons are provided to the director (illness, family emergency).  Absences known in advance must be communicated in advance to the director.

  • Disruptive or inattentive behavior in class will be given one verbal warning.  If repeated, the child will be seated to observe the remainder of that day's class.

  • Persistent lateness, absence, or unacceptable behavior may result in a student being dismissed from the cast without refund.

I have read and agree to the casting and classroom behavior policies.
